My baby girl is “1derful”

1derful.jpgFrom the minute I saw this t-shirt I knew I had to have it for my baby girl. I was perusing babystyle.com and came across this adorable 1derful t-shirt. My pumpkin is turning one in a couple of weeks (Wow, has it really been a year?!) and I couldn’t let her big day pass without this attire!

I’ve already had it on her at least five times. We had to try it on of course, then she had her photos professionally taken in it … then I successfully attempted to take her picture myself for her party invites.  Baby girl is pretty much a peanut; she’s not quite 18 lbs., which I think is pretty small. She’s still wearing some 3-6 month sleepers and a lot of 6-9 and 6-12 month clothes. So, when babystyle only offered a 12-18 month and an 18-24 month size I was a little worried it wouldn’t fit. No worries, it was perfect. Since it’s still freezing cold here, I layered a long-sleeve t-shirt under it when I took her to have her pictures taken. I’ll probably do that when she wears it for her birthday party too. She looks adorable in it! See?

And, since the t-shirt doesn’t directly reference her birthday, it just says 1, she’ll be able to wear it all year long! It’s not a one-time wear that so many special occasion things are these days. To top it off, the t-shirt was reasonably priced. Only $18, plus S&H. What a deal!

Nineteen Minutes: Book Review

Jodi Picoult has written a fascinating novel about school shootings, a topic that has been on our minds and in the news too often these days. In this story, we learn about the life of Peter Houghton and his struggles through his years in public school. He was overwhelmed with being bullied and with the expectations of living up to his older brother’s standards. As a young boy, Peter was good friends with Josie Cormier and as the years passed, Josie fell temptation to becoming part of the popular crowd and left Peter behind. Peter quickly became the boy that all the popular kids picked on, day in and day out. Josie, unfortunately, was a part of that crowd. She never actually did the bullying, but she never stopped it either. She was happy being the popular girl and didn’t want to risk her reputation for Peter. Eventually, Peter’s anger filled him and he went to school with two loaded weapons and began shooting. As the story unfolds, Peter gets put on trial and the reader learns about his life and personal struggles. Picoult did an amazing job of connecting with Peter’s feelings and showing the reader the true, yet sad, effects bullying has on teenagers today.

I read this book because a fellow educator suggested it. As I began reading, I found myself struggling to remember characters and their relatives within the story. Picoult often jumps between characters and scenes, making it somewhat difficult for the reader to follow. However, as I got further into the book, the relationships were clarified and I couldn’t put it down. As one would expect, I thought I would feel compassion for the victims of the shooting. Of course, I did, but I was surprised at how much sympathy I felt for Peter. Before the results of his trial were revealed, I found myself wishing that he would not be sentenced to life in prison. After reading this story, I truly believe it is one that everyone should read. It teaches an important life lesson and has greatly impacted my life.

The Kingdom: Movie Review

Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Chris Cooper and Jason Bateman star in this well produced action movie about terrorism in the Middle East. After a bomb kills dozens in a Western housing compound in Saudi Arabia, FBI Special Agent Jamie Foxx puts together his own team of FBI agents (consisting of Garner, Cooper and Bateman) and negotiates a five-day trip to Saudia Arabia without the governments knowledge. Upon arriving in Saudi Arabia they find it difficult to put the pieces of the puzzle together due to the lack of control given to them by the Saudi’s. After convincing Saudi royalty of their strategy and making friends along the way, they are given necessary accss to the people and places most important to the crime. With Saudi Colonel Al-Ghazi by their side and their dedication to solving the case, their investigation leads them to the killer’s front doorstep. With their lives on the line, they fight for justice to be served.

Personal Insight: I thought this was a very good movie overall. It gave a nice insight to what is going on in the Middle East and it sort of help put things into perspective, such as the war on terrorism. This movie is also interesting because it doesn’t just show you the combat scenes like a typical war movie might. It also shows you different points of view and allows you to see how things work from the governments standpoint. It shows various laws and regulations that are taken into consideration before sending U.S. personnel to a foreign country. All of this was very interesting and added to the value of the film. Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Chris Cooper and Jason Bateman all played their roles very well and seemed very engaged their parts. I also must give applause to director Peter Berg for directing a great film. This film was not based on a true story yet it seemed very real and, as I can only imagine, probably depicts very well a lot of what really is happening. This film is a must see, not just for those who enjoy action movies but for everyone for its cultural and real world value.
